Karmu (Shashi Kapoor) is a happy-go-lucky inhabitant of Uthup – a small village, living along with his widowed mother (Leela Mishra). A village girl named Somu (Simi Garewal) wants to marry Karmu but Karmu turns down her marriage proposal as she is not his dream girl. On a trip to a nearby market town, Karmu meets Nanki (Hema Malini), a feisty tribal from a neighboring village. They fall in love with each other but suffer a major setback when Nanki’s father Mahto comes to know about their relationship. Nanki is forbidden to meet Karmu and locked up in her room.
